Over the past year or so, there has been a push to switch from Type I or Type II cement to Type IL, Portland Limestone Cement (PLC). It is easy to understand this initiative’s main goal to lower Portland cement’s carbon footprint; however, it may not be clear how this change in cementitious materials may influence fresh and hardened concrete properties. During this presentation, we will dispel some myths and give clear facts about using PLC and demonstrate how similar Type IL is to Type I/II cement and how it is engineered and manufactured. We will discuss the recommended steps in changing your cement to PLC and how it can still be used with supplementary cementitious materials such as fly ash and slag. Also, we will share how PLC’s provisions are currently included in various codes, standards and specifications across the U.S. This presentation will also cover the technical results from various projects including information related to specifying PLC for use in projects.

At the conclusion of this course, you will be able to:
• Describe how PLC’s chemical properties differ from the cement you are currently using.
• Explain PLC’s potential impact on your product’s carbon footprint.
• Discuss how Type IL hydrates in comparison to Type I/II cement and what that means for fresh concrete properties as well as short- and long-term strength and performance.

Nicolas Marks has worked in the cement industry for over 16 years. He has worked for multiple construction materials organizations serving as a leader in various roles such as technical services, process and quality management. Nicolas earned his B.S in Chemical Engineering and later earned a Masters of Business Administration, both from Mississippi State University.
